The Australian Shepherd does not come in different sizes. A 14 inch Aussie and a 24 inch Aussie are both still an Aussie. The words “Miniature” and “Toy” are used by unethical breeders as a marketing ploy. Varieties are not a part of the breed. Per the Breed Standard, as set forth by the breed’s founding club “ASCA”, and the AKC Parent Club “USASA”, the breed has a preferred height of 18 to 23 inches and allows for sizes outside of that range that are otherwise quality examples.
Buyer beware of breeders selling dogs registered as “size variations” of the Australian Shepherd, especially when registered with registries other than AKC or ASCA. They are using the good name of the Australian Shepherd to sell dogs to unsuspecting and uninformed buyers. ASDR is one of the most common and is not a reputable or respected registry. Do not fall for breeders advertising based on size, and confirm that all health testing is being performed, including OFA eyes, hips and elbows, as well as DNA testing for genetic disease.
The “Miniature Australian Shepherd”, “North American Shepherd”, “North American Miniature Shepherd”, “Miniature American Shepherd” and/or “Toy Australian Shepherd” are not recognized as Australian Shepherds by AKC or ASCA. They consider these dogs to be distinct and separate breeds and will not accept them into the registry.
